The tanning membership is $5–$399

Tanning is a membership business. The single-visit price exists largely to make the monthly rate look reasonable beside it, and both are set per salon.

Who we priced

Tanning membership, side by side

Every brand runs the same ladder under different names: basic beds at the bottom, faster beds above, then an all-access tier including spray tanning and wellness rooms. Paying twelve months up front is consistently the cheapest per-month route and the least flexible.

What you're paying for

Tanning membership 104 priced services tracked

Recurring tanning access, sold monthly or paid a year up front, tiered by which beds and services are included.

Paying twelve months up front is consistently the cheapest per-month route at these chains, and consistently the least flexible.

  • Tier (which bed levels are included)
  • Monthly vs paid-up-front
  • Salon sets its own rates
  • Promotional periods are common
Wellness services 5 priced services tracked

Non-tanning services tanning salons have added: red light therapy, infrared saunas and similar rooms.

Wellness rooms are how tanning chains sell through the summer, when bed demand falls away.

  • Usually bundled into higher membership tiers
  • Per-session rates are set per salon
Single tanning visit 52 priced services tracked

A one-off visit, without a membership: sunbed, spray tan, or a wellness-room session.

The single-visit price is the honest comparison point between chains, since membership tiers are structured too differently to line up.

  • Bed level or service type
  • Introductory offers distort the advertised price
  • Salon sets its own rates

What's included

A single-visit price buys one session at one equipment level. It does not carry over to a higher-level bed.
Lotions and accelerators are sold separately at most salons and are not included in a session or a membership.
Salons are required to provide protective eyewear, and most will not let you tan without it. Disposable pairs are sometimes charged for; reusable ones are sold.
Memberships are tied to the levels named in the tier. Spray tanning and wellness services (red light, salt rooms, saunas) are included only where the tier says so.
Monthly memberships bill automatically until cancelled. Twelve-month upfront plans are paid once and generally cannot be refunded partway.
Freezing a membership carries a monthly fee at some chains.

Choosing a chain

Match the plan to a season, not to a year. Most tanning use is concentrated in a few months, and the cheapest per-month rate is also the hardest to leave.
Single visits and small visit packs are the sensible route for occasional use; a membership only wins if you go regularly for several months.
Decide between UV and spray before comparing prices. They are separate ladders at most chains, and a tier covering one may not cover the other.
If the wellness rooms are what you actually want, price the wellness-only membership rather than the all-access tier.
Read the promotional rate carefully: introductory pricing in this category usually reverts to a higher ongoing rate, and the reversion date is the number that matters.

What moves the price

Equipment level, from basic beds up through the faster high-pressure ones.
Whether the tier includes spray tanning, wellness services or both.
Payment structure: monthly billing against twelve months paid up front.
Promotional and limited-time rates against the ongoing rate.
How many people are on the plan, where family memberships exist.
Add-ons bought per session, and lotion, which is priced separately.
The salon itself, since these prices are set locally.

Ways to pay less

Check the expiry on anything prepaid. Visit packs and promotional sessions commonly come with a use-by window, and unused sessions are simply lost.
Freeze over the months you will not use rather than cancelling and rejoining, but weigh the freeze fee against the dues you would save.
Buy the level you will actually use. The faster beds cost more per session, and a lower level used consistently is the cheaper route to the same result.
Note the ongoing rate and the date an introductory price ends before signing, and set a reminder for it.
Split the cost where a chain sells a family or second-person membership.
Cancel in the way the contract requires and keep proof; monthly plans renew until stopped.

Menu terms

What the words on a tanning price list mean.

Bed level
Equipment grade, usually numbered. Higher levels use stronger or higher-pressure lamps and are priced above the basic beds.
Session
One visit in one bed or booth. Salons cap session length by equipment and skin type.
Spray tan or sunless
A sprayed cosmetic tan with no UV involved. Priced on its own ladder, often light, medium and dark.
Red light therapy
A non-UV light room sold as a wellness service, usually part of a higher or wellness-specific tier.
Salt room or salt pod
A wellness service, not a tanning service, that appears in all-access and wellness tiers.
Freeze fee
A reduced monthly charge to hold a membership without using it.
Paid up front
A twelve-month plan paid in one payment. The cheapest per month and normally non-refundable.
Limited time offer
A promotional rate that reverts to a standard price. Check the date it reverts and what it reverts to.
Accelerator lotion
A lotion sold at the counter to be used before tanning. Always a separate purchase.

When an independent beats a chain

An independent salon is worth considering when you want a specific piece of equipment or a spray tan applied by a person rather than a booth: single-operator studios often run better spray tanning, take the time to match a shade, and sell visits without any contract behind them. They are also the simpler option for occasional use, since there is no plan renewing in the background. The chains win on price for regular users and on the range of equipment: the level ladder, the wellness rooms and the ability to walk into any branch on the plan you already pay for.

Before you pay

Compare single-visit prices between brands; membership tiers do not line up.
Introductory and promotional pricing is constant in this category, so advertised rates often are not the ongoing rate.
Check whether the tier includes spray tanning and wellness services or only beds.
Why are there so many membership tiers?

Tiers gate which bed levels you can use and whether spray tanning and wellness rooms are included. The equipment differences are real, but the tier names are brand marketing and do not compare across chains.

Is paying a year up front cheaper?

At every chain we sampled, yes, on a per-month basis. It also removes the ability to cancel, which is the trade being made.

Do prepaid sessions and packages expire?

Usually. Visit packs and promotional session bundles normally carry a use-by window set by the salon, and unused sessions are not refunded. Ask for the expiry date at the counter and treat it as part of the price.

Can I tan every day on an unlimited membership?

Unlimited refers to billing, not to frequency. Salons limit how often you can use a bed (commonly one session a day, with a required gap between sessions), and higher-level beds carry stricter limits.
